September 2005 fand in Berlin, organisiert von der Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, der Bundeszentrale für Politische Bildung und der Konrad Adenauer Stiftung eine viel beachtete internationale Konferenz mit dem Titel „Progressive Thinking in Contemporary Islam“ statt. Bekannte Islamwissenschaftler, Theologen und Politikwissenschaftler diskutierten zentrale Fragen des kritischen Diskurses zu Islam und Moderne. Im Mittelpunkt standen die Scharia-Debatte, Probleme religiöser Autorität, ein zeitgemäßes Verständnis der religiösen Quellen und die Rolle des Islam in Europa. Die TeilnehmerInnen der Tagung stimmten darin überein, dass der Islam als Religion und Kultur in einem evolutionären Reformprozess seinen Beitrag zur Stärkung von Demokratie und Zivilgesellschaft leisten kann. Wir dokumentieren in diesem Heft „Islam und Gesellschaft“ den einführenden Beitrag von Professor Dr. Christian W. Troll. From September 22nd to 24th, 2005, a highly regarded international conference entitled "Progressive Thinking in Contemporary Islam" took place in Berlin, organized by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, the Federal Agency for Civic Education, and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. Renowned Islamic scholars, theologians, and political scientists discussed key questions in the critical discourse on Islam and modernity. The focus was on the Sharia debate, problems of religious authority, a contemporary understanding of religious sources, and the role of Islam in Europe. The conference participants agreed that Islam, as both a religion and a culture, can contribute to strengthening democracy and civil society through an evolutionary process of reform.
