Description
Summary:The article discusses some problems of the "infallibility" (a difficult word which is easily misunderstood) of the papal magisterium. The history and the meaning of "infallibility" (in the dispute between Franciscan "Spirituals" and "Conventuals", under examination in the Küng-Rahner-controversy between 1970 and 1973 and as an ecumenical possibility put forward by Wolfhart Pannenberg) show that this word does not intend to decribe a sovereign and absolute power of the papal office, but expresses the responsibility of the pope to the apostolic (traditional) faith (depositum fîdei). The analysis of the text of "Pastor Aeternus" confirms this interpretation. Two new ecumenical documents ("The Gift of Autority" 1999 and "Communio Sanctorum" 2000) have expressly considered the question of papal infallibility. The Anglican/Roman Catholic Statement "The Gift of Authority" deserves special Catholic theological consideration. Despite some questions, which have as yet not been answered and remain open, the treatment of "infallibility" in this document is an important ecumenical step forward in the direction which Pope John Paul II. asked for in the encyclica "Ut Unum Sint" (1995) (Nr. 95–96).
