| Summary: | La création d’une chaire d’histoire des religions en 1873 à l’Université de Genève intervient non seulement dans un contexte propice à l’innovation, du fait de la transformation de l’ancienne Académie de Genève en une université moderne en 1872, mais surtout à un moment de crise de la théologie protestante, avec une profonde mise en cause des fondements du christianisme. La recherche montre que l’histoire des religions, telle qu’elle se constitue au XIXe siècle, émerge d’un champ chrétien. Cet article s’appliquera à le définir, en saisissant quels sont les enjeux, pour les protagonistes genevois, d’une approche historique des religions. Cet article montrera en quoi la naissance de l’histoire des religions participe notamment des conflits idéologiques internes au monde protestant. The creation of a Chair in the History of Religions at the University of Geneva in 1873 took place not only in a context of innovation, with the transformation of the former Académie de Genève into a modern University in 1872, but above all at a time of crisis in Protestant theology, with a profound questioning of the foundations of Christianity. Research shows that the history of religions, as it emerged in the nineteenth century, emerged from a Christian field. This article will endeavour to define this field, by understanding what was at stake for the protagonists in Geneva in a historical approach to religions. This article will show how the birth of the History of religions was part of the ideological conflicts within the Protestant world. |
