| Summary: | I hope I may be forgiven if use my two books, Jesus the Jew and Jesus and the World of Judaism, and the comments and criticisms generated by them, to present the general issue facing us. With the hindsight of fourteen years of argument, it is interesting to note that in 1973, 'Jesus the Jew' was chosen because it was a strong title, whereas by now it has become part of common parlance (the 1983 Easter leader of The (London) Times bore the title, 'Jesus was a Jew' , and the present bishop of Oxford spoke in the (London) Observer of December 21, 1986 of 'a continuing [theological] emphasis on Jesus the Jew'. There is indeed a danger now that the expression may soon become a cliche. After a brief survey of the two studies, I will tum to the religious reactions — Christian and Jewish, although perhaps understandably, more frequently Christian than Jewish — that the current preoccupation with the topic have provoked. Finally, from behind the shelter of the historian's proverbial 'without fear or favour' (sine ira et studio) objectivity, I will endeavour to formulate some questions habitually bypassed, both by denominational writers and practitioners of inter-faith dialogue. |
