| Summary: | In this article I will put forward the image of Christ as Cosmic Tree, an image that has the propensity to nurture positive attitudes to the environment from within the Christian tradition. This is a "road less travelled" in Christian theology. Therefore I will begin with a brief overview of the issues in question and some of the approaches already taken in response. Some comments on trees in general and the idea of Cosmic Tree in world religions will illuminate what the significance might be for Christianity if Jesus were to be viewed as such. I will focus on the image of Cosmic Tree in Judaism as a kind of prefiguring of Jesus as Cosmic Tree in Christian literature and art. |
