Description
Summary:This paper presents new Syriac fragments of book 1 of the agricultural manual of Vindonius Anatolius of Berytus (4th century CE), concerning weather signs. These passages of the Syriac Anatolius are not contained in Paul de Lagarde’s 1860 edition Geoponicon in sermonem Syriacum versorum quae supersunt; they are present in the Greek text of the Geoponica, though in a later redaction and in combination with other sources. The manuscript to which we owe the new Syriac fragments contains two distinct versions of the text, which are here presented side by side. The paper concludes by comparing the text of the newfound Syriac fragments with Carlo Scardino’s 2009 edition of book 1 of the Arabic Anatolius and offering some preliminary observations concerning the circulation of Anatolius in Syriac.
