Description
Summary:One of the less studied works of the secretary of the Mamluk chancery al-Qalqashandī is the Maʾāthir, a book on the practice of secretaries in this chancery. The Maʾāthir provide ample insight into the ways the Caliphate and the Caliph are framed in the bureaucratic practice of the Mamluk empire. The specific approach to the framing of the Caliphate allows for a better understanding of the role of charismatic institutions in Islamic contexts; the role of charismatic objects is reconsidered. Thus, we will be able to rethink Weber’s notion of charismatic rule.
