Summary:Lexicographers have identified among the biblical and Qumran attestations of גאל two homophonous roots. According to this analysis, גאל II connotes staining, desecration, and/or defilement. This article reassesses the examples of גאל II in the Hebrew Bible and the Dead Sea Scrolls and, based upon this new analysis, argues that the core semantics of this root concern diminishment, not defilement.
