Wie kaum ein anderes hat es sich in der abendländischen Geistesgeschichte als "Theoriegenerator" (Odo Marquard) bewährt, in dessen Rahmen das Verhältnis von Gott, Mensch und Welt umfassend thematisiert werden konnte. Nachdem zunächst die bleibende Relevanz des in der Gegenwart häufig allzu leichtfertig verabschiedeten Theodizeeproblems nachgewiesen wurde, werden Strategien zu seiner Vermeidung einer kritischen Prüfung unterzogen. Vor diesem Hintergrund gilt es dann nach den Perspektiven für seine Bewältigung zu fragen. Im Zentrum stehen hier die axiologische Frage nach dem Wert unserer Welt, die alles andere als die bestmögliche (im Sinne von Leibniz) erscheint, sowie die nach den Pflichten, die das Verhältnis von Schöpfer und Geschöpf anleiten könnten. Methodisch werden insbesondere begriffliche und argumentative Ressourcen der aktuellen analytischen Philosophie für das Verständnis dieses klassischen Problems fruchtbar gemacht. The problem of theodicy poses the question of the compatibility of the existence of an omnipotent, all-good, and omniscient God with the existence, nature, extent, and distribution of evil in the world. A central aim of this book is to clarify precisely what this problem entails. Like few others, it has proven itself in the history of Western thought as a "theory generator" (Odo Marquard), within which the relationship between God, humanity, and the world could be comprehensively addressed. After first demonstrating the enduring relevance of the problem of theodicy, which is often dismissed too readily in the present day, strategies for avoiding it are subjected to critical examination. Against this backdrop, the perspectives for addressing it are then explored. At the heart of this discussion are the axiological question of the value of our world, which appears to be anything but the best possible (in the Leibnizian sense), and the question of the duties that could guide the relationship between creator and creature.
