| Summary: | This essay explores the symbolism of hand gestures in Buddhist and Christian iconography, using some of Peirce's semiotic categories to discuss the possible meanings of these signs and the relationships of meaning, from an ethical perspective, that these signs establish with their interpreters; in other words, what could these signs inform us about the ethical attitudes proposed by their respective religions. To carry out this investigation, we present a brief overview of the role of hand gestures in the contexts of Mahāyāna Buddhism and Roman Catholic and Orthodox Christianity, and analyze in more detail the gesture of fearlessness in Buddhism and the gesture of prayer in Christianity, understanding that the former points to an approach to ethics as a path that leads to overcoming fear for the benefit of all beings, while the latter points to a relationship of supplication, praise, and obedience to a superior being and Creator, God. O presente ensaio explora o simbolismo dos gestos manuais presentes na iconografia budista e cristã, fazendo uso de algumas categorias da semiótica de Peirce para discutir sobre possíveis significados desses signos e quais relações de sentido, na perspectiva da ética, esses signos estabelecem com seus intérpretes; em outras palavras, o que esses signos podem informar sobre condutas éticas propostas por suas respectivas religiões. Para realizar essa investigação, apresentamos um breve panorama do papel dos gestos manuais nos contextos do budismo Mahāyāna e do cristianismo católico romano e ortodoxo, e analisamos em mais detalhes o gesto de destemor no budismo e o gesto de oração no cristianismo, entendendo que o primeiro aponta para uma abordagem da ética como caminho que leva para a superação do medo em benefício de todos os seres, enquanto o segundo aponta para uma relação de súplica, louvor e obediência a um ser superior e Criador, Deus. Este ensayo explora el simbolismo de los gestos con las manos en la iconografía budista y cristiana, utilizando algunas categorías de la semiótica de Peirce para discutir los posibles significados de estos signos y las relaciones de significado, desde una perspectiva ética, que estos signos establecen con sus intérpretes; en otras palabras, lo que estos signos pueden decirnos sobre la conducta ética propuesta por sus respectivas religiones. Para llevar a cabo esta investigación, presentamos un breve resumen del papel de los gestos con las manos en los contextos del budismo mahayana y el cristianismo católico romano y ortodoxo, y analizamos con más detalle el gesto de la intrepidez en el budismo y el gesto de la oración en el cristianismo, entendiendo que el primero apunta a un enfoque ético como camino que conduce a la superación del miedo en bene¬ cio de todos los seres, mientras que el segundo apunta a una relación de súplica, alabanza y obediencia a un ser superior y Creador, Dios. |
