Description
Summary:Academic motivation among students has been widely researched and is a topic of global concern in education. This article develops a faith-integrated perspective on this topic by synthesizing findings from a review of literature related to academic motivation, religious motivation, Christian higher education, and theology. One aim of this research was to fill a gap in existing literature, as faith is not often considered in academic motivation studies. The approach integrated faith with prominent academic motivation theories, which include achievement goal theory, attribution theory, expectancy-value theory, self-determination theory, and social cognitive theory. One notable point of integration was the connection between calling and motivation. A sense of calling can help students, both intrinsically and extrinsically, set meaningful and purposeful faith-based goals, overcome challenges, stay motivated through helping others, and build self-efficacy. A faith-integrated perspective on academic motivation has implications for Christian higher education, which include nurturing a sense of calling in students and fostering community through relatedness.
