Description
Summary:Thanks to various transcriptions, we are acquainted with two ancient lists of relics which were found at Santa Maria de Ripoll and Santa Maria de Girona, respectively. A comparison of these lists shows that they contained almost identical texts, which had possibly been written by the same hand and which bore witness to the existence of one same deposit of relics distributed between the two churches, many of which originally came from the Holy Land. A study of the texts, of the relics, and of the circumstances of them both, allow us to postulate that the central set was obtained by the bishop and abbot Arnulf on his visit to Rome in the year 951, and it was surely distributed later on between Ripoll and Girona by the count-bishop Miró Bonfill. We also put forward hypotheses about the configuration of the main altar of Santa Maria de Ripoll and about some relics which are still found today in the Cathedral of Girona.
