Description
Summary:This paper examines the development of purpose by leaders who work in emerging economies solely to help alleviate poverty. Such leaders have a higher order awareness of their place in a broader interconnected universe. The focus is on what informs both the leaders' awareness and their purpose. Taking an inductive approach, 12 entrepreneurs were interviewed and the data analysed by identifying connecting themes and patterns for the development of a conceptual framework. The data revealed that these 'consciously aware' leaders were engaged in systemic transformational change rather than incremental adjustments. They discovered their purpose through an inner directive, and their self-development occurred through a deepening of awareness of qualities that transcended individual ego. The conceptual model contributes through identifying the conduct of leaders that included capabilities of reflexive practice, a belief in nonduality and engagements that were mutually uplifting.
