Description
Summary:There are Pentecostal and Charismatic movements on the one hand, all of which in some way emphasize participation in the life of the Spirit, and which are now part of the religious landscape of most Christian church traditions, old and new, and there are evangelical churches on the other, distinguished by the central role of a personal and deliberate conversion to Jesus Christ, which represent denominations often associated with various Protestant spiritual revivals. They share a complex history marked by similarities and dissimilarities, often marked by an activist mindset that has greatly impacted the way they relate to each other. This interaction and interplay of influences merits genuine theological reflection. Beyond a mere historical or sociological analysis of Pentecostalism, it has become increasingly important to consider the very nature of Pentecostal spirituality (focusing on the various dimensions and practical dynamics of the actual experience of the Spirit across Church denominations) before attempting to articulate a reasoned Pentecostal theology (focusing on specific and characteristic beliefs about the meaning and implications of such experience). The purpose of this article is to contribute to a growing awareness of major issues at stake. It finishes therefore with a proposed blueprint for a distinctive Pentecostal-Charismatic theology for the twenty-first century.
