| Summary: | Among the late antique « epic Passions », the Sebastian Passion (BHL 7543) is of major importance for its highly literate style and its striking medieval posterity. It was written in Rome near 430 by an anonymous author. This latter was probably Arnobius Junior, whose exegetic and doctrinal work (Praedestinatus, Conflictus cum Serapione, Commentarii in Psalmos, Ad Gregoriam) tallies exactly with the same period (430-450). The Sebastian Passion can be attributed to Arnobius on the basis of thematic, linguistic and stylistic convergences as well as textual parallels. Parmi les « Passions épiques » tardo-antiques, celle de Sébastien (BHL 7543) a souvent attiré l’attention, tant pour sa facture littéraire que pour sa remarquable postérité médiévale. Elle fut rédigée à Rome, dans les années 430, par un auteur anonyme dans lequel on peut aujourd’hui reconnaître Arnobe le Jeune, dont l’activité exégétique et doctrinale (Praedestinatus, Conflictus cum Serapione, Commentarii in Psalmos, Ad Gregoriam) correspond précisément à la période 430-450. Cette attribution arnobienne est confortée par une série de convergences thématiques, linguistiques et stylistiques, ainsi que par des parallèles textuels assez étendus. |
