Description
Summary:I argue that the technocratic paradigm, used by Pope Francis to address ecology and AI, (1) can be considered a gnosis in the sense that H. Jonas, among others, gave to the gnosticism of some contemporary philosophies, and (2) that it is at the basis of the intra-ecclesial phenomenon that Francis calls new Gnosticism. To begin with, I analyse what a paradigm is, what technocracy is, and what gnosis is. After presenting Francis' texts, they are contextualized with reflections on the technological world after World War II and the use of the atomic bomb: Guardini, Marcel, Heidegger, Jonas and Arendt. The features of the technocratic paradigm are presented: totality, immanence, dominating omnipotence, soteriology that denies creatureliness, metaethical (matter, limit and evil) and disincarnating; its theological origin is pointed out according to Francis: immanentist concupiscence that cloisters. From the hand of Jonas (demythologization of Gnosticism) and Voegelin, the features required of a thought to be Gnostic are presented, allowing us to see the confluence with the technocratic paradigm. Finally, it is shown how technocratic rationality is in the background of current ecclesial Gnosticism according to its characteristics. It concludes with what the paradigm supposes as gnosis and the way to transcend it.
