| Summary: | Certain interpretations of the story of Genesis 9:20-27 and the genealogy of peoples in Genesis 10 have sought to justify the enslavement of black peoples. These interpretations are alien to the original meaning of these biblical texts, but they have extremely serious historical consequences. This article reviews how some Dominicans of the 16th and 17th centuries, associated with the West Indies, interpreted or reread these stories in order to discover whether or not they participated in any way in this current of interpretation of slavery. |
