Description
Summary:"Mutual consultation" (šûrâ) is referred to in Surah 2:233, 3:159 and 42:36-38 within different literary contexts. In this article the exposition of the verses is discussed, focusing on aspects relating to grammar and translation. Reference is made to attempts at utilizing the concept in the political domain. It is argued that the Qur’an does not provide any straightforward evidence for the application of šûrâ in modern governance. Basing any generalization of this nature on the three above verses is problematic. At most one may suggest that an attitude of magnanimity is reflected by the focused contexts.,
