Description
Summary:Whoever wants to talk about Israelite seals and sealings nowadays must be prepared to face a highly sceptical audience. Mention the names of Robert Deutsch or Shlomo Moussaieff, and you can be certain to provoke mirth. Announce that you want to speak about the seals of Israelite women and scornful laughter may wen be your lot, because "everybody" knows that Israelite women did not need seals. They did not have any authority to speak of in the patriarchal society they had to live in. Am I exaggerating? Even very late in the past century several exegetes confidently stated that only men used to wear seals in ancient Israel and that for that reason it can only be the bride who is speaking in Song of Songs 8:6. This paper deals with the seals of Israelite women in authority.
