| Summary: | This study examines the connection between Quaker faith and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts in U.S. independent Quaker schools. It explores how DEI administrators articulate the role of Quaker philosophy, theology, and practice in their work. Using a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design, the research begins with a broad survey followed by qualitative interviews with DEI administrators. Findings indicate that Quaker schools' DEI efforts are influenced by Quaker values such as the inner light and the testimonies of community and stewardship. However, the concept of Quaker theology and the challenge of confronting historical biases present tensions. This study provides insights into the unique approach of Quaker schools to DEI and the complexities involved in aligning these efforts with Quaker beliefs. |
