Description
Summary:The 2015 encyclical Laudato si’ and the 2023 apostolic exhortation Laudate Deum have generated considerable debate among theologians, particularly regarding whether ecological reflection should be understood as part of Catholic social teaching. The prevailing tendency has been to treat it as a field compatible with “secular” perspectives. This paper, by revisiting the historical roots of Christian ecology, aims to demonstrate that without a theological framework, ecological discourse risks either dissolving into a vague spirituality or being reduced to merely pragmatic reports. A more mature reflection, however, may be oriented towards the theology of creation, Trinitarian theology, and Christology.
