Description
Summary:G T Montague wrote recently: ‘Revolution in science occurs when scientists find the old paradigm increasingly inadequate to cope with anomalies, and some become converted to a new paradigm, though theses under the old continue to proliferate’. A review of Matthean research, particularly in respect of hermeneutics and theological content, reinforces the validity of this statement.Retrospection reveals that variance in scholarly opinions accords with the exegetical methods which have respectively been applied in Matthean studies. The article describes and evaluates the possibilities as well as the insufficiencies of the exegetical processes of two paradigms: historical criticism (which consists of inter alia ‘Literarkritik’, ‘Traditions-‘ and ‘Formgeschichte’, and ‘Redaktionsgeschichte’) and synchronical methods (such as structuralism, the South African discourse analysis and narrative criticism). At present, Matthean research takes place mainly according to the paradigms mentioned above: some scholars have been converted to the new, though theses under the old continue to proliferate.
