Description
Summary:Visions of AI superintelligence and evolution from human to posthuman machines cast a shadow over current AI. Whether plausible or not, they circulate globally. Ethnographic and cross-cultural research promotes AI values by provincializing Western perspectives and putting them into conversation with non-Western views. Drawing on research in Korea and India, this paper argues that virtuous AI and AI-assisted virtue intertwine with the political project of justice in academic, industrial, and governmental discourse. Dreams of transcendence impact our deployment of AI; to guarantee human flourishing, we must build machines—and our understanding of them—with attention to global values and ethics.
