Description
Summary:This article offers a brief exposition of the Sentences of Peter Lombard: a presentation of the work’s structure, a brief explanation of its importance for the Middle Ages, and finally, an exposition of the Magister’s understanding of God’s will. It goes into the distinction between God’s will understood as assent, and God’s will understood as sign, a distinction that offers an explanation for many difficult passages in the Bible. Peter Lombard well understands the scope of the problem, and for this reason he is on the threshold, as it were, of the explanations offered by the great authors that follow him, but he does not cross it. This tendency can clearly be seen when he discusses the problem of the conformity of human will with God’s will.
