Tradicionalmente interpretados como forças de adversidade, doenças e oposição espiritual, os Ajogune Elénìnìtransgridem as fronteiras entre o humano e o sobrenatural, evocando sensações de estranhamento e desconforto existencial. Exploramos como essas entidades não apenas representam ameaças externas, mas também refletem tensões internas da subjetividade e das relações sociais. Ao questionar as categorias normativas da modernidade e da ciência ocidental, o estudo sugere que essas figuras desafiam a centralidade humana e abrem espaço para uma ecologia espiritual complexa, onde o mundo é permeado por interações entre seres visíveis e invisíveis. This paper investigates the figures of Ajogun and Elénìnì in Yoruba cosmology considering Sigmund Freud’s theory of the unsettling, Jeffrey Cohen’s theory of monstrosity, and Julia Kristeva’s notions of the abject. Traditionally interpreted as forces of adversity, disease, and spiritual opposition, Ajogun and Elénìnì transgress the boundaries between the human and the supernatural, evoking feelings of estrangement and existential discomfort. We explore how these entities not only represent external threats but also reflect internal tensions of subjectivity and social relations. By questioning the normative categories of modernity and Western science, the study suggests that these figures challenge human centrality and open up space for a complex spiritual ecology, where the world is permeated by interactions between visible and invisible beings. |
