Description
Summary:To understand the seemingly brutal intervention of God in the story of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5:1–11, the article classifies it in terms of Formgeschichte as a narrative about sacrilege and capital punishment. Its intention then is to depict the holiness of the end-time Christ community as an actualization of Israel’s holiness. Striking narrative motifs – a relatively minor offense, a very harsh punishment, Peter as an unquestioned authority, young men as undertakers, and the repetition of feet – lead to the interpretation of the text: The narrative demonstrates the divinely protected beginning of the first community of Christ in Jerusalem. The Spirit of God protects it from internal threats to its existence. This reflects the unique quality of the first community, though it remains a distinctive characteristic of its beginning. Actualizations or updates remain the responsibility of the Christian community, for which the Visio Wettini serves as an example.
