| Summary: | Is it possible to translate the divine name Yahweh Ṣevā'ôt into Afrikaans? The divine name Yahweh Ṣevā'ôt, including its various combinations, is the most frequently occurring epithet of God in the Old Testament. All variant forms of the epithet occur 284 times in the Old Testament of which one finds 250 occurrences in the prophetic books and 15 occurrences in the Psalms, but there is no reference in the Pentateuch. The origin and meaning of Yahweh Ṣevā'ôt are debated and Bible translations translate it differently. The two 'official' Afrikaans versions present different translations : 1933/53 Afrikaans translation - 'Here van die leërskare' (Lord of Hosts); 1983 Afrikaans translation - 'Here die Almagtige' (Lord Almighty). Other Afrikaans translations and paraphrases use the following words : 'almagtige Here' (Almighty God); 'Here' (Lord); and 'Magtige van die hemelse leër' (Mighty God of the heavenly army). The article discusses the origin and meaning of Yahweh Ṣevā'ôt on three different levels : (1) Grammatical and syntactical issues; (2) Religio-historical issues; and (3) Semantic issues. We conclude that it is difficult to translate the divine name, but not totally impossible. An all-inclusive understanding of Yahweh Ṣevā'ôt leads the author to suggest the translation 'Here van alle magte' (Lord of all powers). |
