Description
Summary:The Hebrew lexeme bha is usually translated as 'love / to love' in the English translations of the Hebrew Bible. This poses a problem, for this term, besides others belonging to the same semantic field, appears in very different contexts where the translation 'love' is not always satisfactory. Some of the most prominent lexicon entries on bha does not help us in this regard. In these entries bha is also mostly translated as 'to love / to like'. A literature study on other sources in which bha is discussed, also did not render very promising results. Reinier de Blois devised a new model for the understanding and translation of Biblical Hebrew lexemes. In developing this model for his project: Semantic Dictionary of Biblical Hebrew he made extensive use of the insights of cognitive linguistics. This model of De Blois could contribute a great deal to the study of bha. I would like to argue, however, that more consideration needs to be given to the syntactic information of the Biblical Hebrew sentences in which bha occurs - in particular the valency patterns of the verbal lexemes, the syntax of the particles and the semantic roles and features of the sentence constituents which occur in combination with bha.
