Description
Summary:This research paper aims to explore the transformative efforts of the London Missionary Society in South Travancore, a princely state of South India, examining why Travancore became the catalyst for Western education and the motivations behind this phenomenon. How does adaptation theory play a crucial role in understanding the transformative efforts of the London Missionary Society in South Travancore? The caste system significantly influences the London missionaries’ approach towards lower-caste individuals. Their activities, including education, medical assistance, and relief works, have effectively integrated missionaries within the lower caste communities. This paper explores the historical impact of Westernization in education by thoroughly analyzing socio-cultural adaptation theories, particularly those of the nineteenth century. Through this analysis, the paper seeks to uncover the interconnected factors that have shaped this impact over time. It posits the theories of adaptation found in Psychology, Anthropology, and Sociology, weaving them together with the historical context of the London Missionary Society and the State of Travancore.
