| Resumo: | This paper investigates the meaning of the word thousands in the second commandment. It is argued that, within this particular context, it should be translated as 'families' rather than as 'thousands' and understood as referring to the fourth of four generations living within the same family. Deuteronomy 7:9 should likewise be understood as 'the family lineage' rather than 'a thousand generations'. |
