| Summary: | This contribution presents a hermeneutical framework for studying the symbolic universe of Biblical Israel The requirements for the proposed hermeneutics are that it must be able to account for continuity between the symbolic worlds of Israel and her Near Eastern neighbours as well as for differences in religious expression. The diversity of traditions internally and the shifts and changes that took place throughout Biblical Israel's history also need to be accounted for. After reviewing and weighing different approaches to religious symbolism from different disciplines, an interpretive strategy that meets the above requirements crystallised in the form of J.S. Kruger's conditionalist approach. |
