Description
Summary:The essay illustrates the rediscovery of Dante and Manzoni by intransigent Catholicism in Bergamo during the late nineteenth-century. The two writers were claimed by Catholics against secular culture during their conflict with the Italian state. They were elevated to great prophets of the homeland, as they should have demonstrated the Christian soul of the nation. In this sense, their valorization contributed to consolidating the historical-theological paradigms that supported the Catholic reconquest of society: for example, the Middle Ages and medieval corporations, as affirmations of authentic civil and religious freedom. The rediscovery of Dante and Manzoni appears thus relevant for understanding, on the one hand, the relationship between Catholics and the nation, and on the other hand, the birth of an original Catholic patriotism.
