Nous apprenons dans l'intrigue qu'elle fut une grande actrice de la Comédie-Française. Marie-Jeanne Gautier a bien existé. Elle est répertoriée sur le site internet du Théâtre ; il s'agit d'une sociétaire du xviiie siècle. Nous avons donc mené l'enquête sur cette virtuose qui s'est convertie durant la Régence et qui est entrée au Carmel de Lyon sous le nom d'Augustine de la Miséricorde à l'époque de Louis XV. The English novelist Lady Georgiana Fullerton, who converted to Catholicism in 1846 as part of the Oxford Movement, published Too Strange not to Be True. A Tale in 1864, one of her most popular works. In this novel with an apologetic bent, a surprising character appears, "Mademoiselle Gauthier". In the plot we learn that she was a great actress at the Comédie-Française. Marie-Jeanne Gautier did exist, and is listed on the Theatre's website; she was a member of the company in the 18th century. So we investigated this virtuoso who converted during the Regency period and entered the Carmelite convent in Lyon under the name of Augustine de la Miséricorde during the reign of Louis XV. |
