The legal and identity implications of the unresolved conflict in Nagorno-Karabagh relate to religious freedom and religious pluralism · This paper presents an interdisciplinary analysis of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, highlighting the complex intersection of historical, legal, and religious dimensions. It examines, on the one hand, the principle of the self-determination of peoples, often at odds with the territorial integrity of states, and situates international resolutions within the broader context of attempts to regulate the crisis. On the other hand, it investigates the destruction of Armenian cultural heritage and the resulting risk of ‘cultural genocide’, in violation of international conventions for the protection of cultural property. Within the South Caucasus context, the Armenian Apostolic Church emerges as a key religious actor in sustaining Armenian communities’ identity and cultural resilience, while Azerbaijan has adopted restrictive laws to control religious activities. This analysis demonstrates that the protection of religious freedom, respect for minorities, and preservation of cultural heritage are inseparable elements in managing ethno-religious conflicts. Finally, the study underscores the urgent need to reinforce the protection of religious pluralism and to develop effective sanctions to prevent the destruction of religious identities from becoming a tolerated practice in other conflict scenarios.
