Description
Summary:This note reexamines Vīdēvdād 18,18–22, aiming to demonstrate that Bartholomae and subsequent translators of the Avesta have misinterpreted the word auuaiŋ́he in these passages. The primary cause of their mistake was N.L. Westergaard’s error in the paragraphing of this section of the Vīdēvdād text. In contrast, the Pahlavi translators correctly identified the sentence boundaries, and Darmesteter, who followed their approach, was on the right track. Furthermore, this note explains why the word appears in the dative case rather than the expected accusative case.
