Summary: | This article reexamines the so-called Abisha Scroll, a manuscript of the Samaritan Hebrew Pentateuch compiled from several heterogeneous parts and held in the highest esteem by the Samaritan community because of its allegedly biblical age. Previous studies on the origin of the storied scroll are reviewed and supplemented with codicological details that have not previously been considered. As a result of these analyses, it is possible to identify the compiler of the scroll who was most likely also the scribe of its most important component: Ā̊bīša ban Fī'nās ban Yūsəf, a scribe and author of piyyutim in the fourteenth century. |
