Description
Summary:Manas Buthelezi is criticised for having been a reluctant political activist in and after the 1980s. He is accused of having abandoned his well-known militant leadership in the fight against apartheid in the 1960s and 1970s in South Africa. This article examines the recent South African political history to establish whether Buthelezi was a radical political activist or not. On the road to democracy, South Africa experienced intensifying human violence as black South Africans fought to liberate themselves. He was a founder of Black Theology in South Africa and sought to achieve liberation in this country. The Black Theology movement continues to live on in community members' conversations, theological institutions, universities and faith-based organisations. This article examines the commitment of Buthelezi to socio-political justice and how Buthelezi influenced the church to work in unity with the community and political and trade union organisations to survive the storm of apartheid.
