| Summary: | The life in religious institutes begins with the novitate and it is considered to be the foundation of religious training. Hence, the novitate training has an important role in accompanying and guiding persons who are seeking to live the religious commitment in response to the call they received. However, today, in the face of decreasing number of vocations, changing lifestyle and uninspiring testimony of community life, how is it possible for religious to respond meaningfully to their call to follow Christ? Since the quality of religious life depends much on the formation of its members, this study attempts to discover how novitate formation could help the religious institutes to address various challenges they face today. Though the study is an inquiry into canon 646 of CIC/83 on the nature and purpose of novitiate formation in its historical and theological context, it also analyzes the role and significance of the novitate in the dormation process in the Eastern Code. Although the formation of the novicces is a complex reality that involves many factors, the study identifies three fundamental elements that are necessary in realizing the purpose of the novitate. They are the structure of the novitate that helps the formation process, and finally and most importantly, the novice who is seeking the formation. The study brings to the fore that, despite varying structures, contexts and circumstancces, the novitate has an undeniable role and inimitable relevance in religious life. |
