Description
Summary:The history of ecclesiastical academic institutions in Rome is still in its infancy, because little attention has been paid so far to their vibrancy and activities, despite the uniqueness of their complex variety and articulation within the city and in the context of its centers of study, teaching and scientific research. A significant contribution is offered by the history of the Pontifical Lateran University, by special title called "the University of the Pope" because of its close ties with the Apostolic See. In the two hundred and fifty years of its life, with the development of its Faculties, its Institutes and its majors, the Lateran University has become an authoritative pole for the study and teaching of theological disciplines, constituting an academic community distinguished above all by the international origin of its students. At the same time, its faculty members -- because of their specific expertise -- have continued to lend valuable support to the mission of the Apostolic See and the service of the Roman Curia.
