| Summary: | Since early modern times, values have been questioned causing rifts within human groups: religious scisms, different political ideologies and lifestyles, cultural particularities claimed for recognition. Due to those divisions conflicts arose, and humiliation in several ways (from assassination to lack of recognition) with them. Toleration has been one of the moral responses to those humiliating practices. Although justified in many ways, is possible to identify a few basic arguments which, combined, have been and are used to defend toleration as a moral practice linked to respect. In this article that catalogue is proposed and the author tries to justify it referring to some philosophers who represent every argumentation mentioned. |
