Description
Summary:Peace and war in the thought of Giorgio La Pira and in the doctrine of the Catholic Church · The subject of the present article traces various aspects of Giorgio La Pira’s theories, following the binomial « impossible war-inevitable peace », called « bold » by Card. Peter K. A. Turkson. The thought of Venerable La Pira, whose beatification process is underway, is analyzed here with particular reference to the so-called Foreword of Cagliari in 1973, which reflects the theses that were being elaborated in those years within the Catholic Church. The Second Vatican Council concluded its work in 1965 with a single condemnation, which was precisely the one referring to war (Gaudium et Spes, 77-82). After all, St. John XXIII had already stated how it was impossible to think that in the atomic age war could be used as an instrument of justice and that the persuasion that disputes between peoples should be resolved through negotiations was prevailing (Pacem in Terris, 67). Firm in the validity of these reflections, this paper concludes that the nuclear abyss will not be there but peace will not cease to be a mirage, although the state of war may be increasingly and gradually less bloody than in the past, when millions and millions of deaths constituted the witness of human folly.
