Unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Herrschaftszeit Karls des Großen (768–814) und Ludwigs des Frommen (814–840) untersucht der vorliegende Band die Bedeutungen und Wirkungen eschatologischen Denkens in Zeitvorstellungen und Geschichtsdeutungen, in Herrschaftsidealen, Bischofsprofilen und Gesellschaftskonzepten sowie nicht zuletzt bei der Beurteilung des karolingischen Herrschers und der Qualität seiner Herrschaft. The prospect of individual death, the universal end times, and the Last Judgment fostered a sense of critical reflection on one's own present in the Carolingian period, of examining conditions for their need for correction, and of governing with a focus on reform. Securing salvation in the afterlife was both the driving force and the standard of evaluation for political action. With particular emphasis on the reigns of Charlemagne (768–814) and Louis the Pious (814–840), this volume examines the meanings and effects of eschatological thought in concepts of time and interpretations of history, in ideals of government, bishop profiles, and concepts of society, and, last but not least, in the assessment of the Carolingian ruler and the quality of his rule.
