Description
Summary:Thomas Merton often referred to economics and the harms of contemporary economic systems in his writings and teachings. A few of Merton's main critiques were that: (1) economic systems, both capitalist and communist, rob humans of their freedom; (2) capitalist systems' focus on individualism has led to alienation and a decay in human values; and (3) modern economic systems reduce people to cogs in the wheel of production. This article explores these critiques and uses them as a starting point to bring Merton's wisdom to the economics discipline by suggesting how to apply them in an introductory course in economics, to which millions of American college students are exposed each year.
