| Summary: | The article is divided into four parts. Initially, we seek to allude to the reconstruction of the city of Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake. Afterwards, the various arguments about the cataclysmic event are presented, whether of an illustrated, Jesuit or even theistic nature. In a third moment, the consequences of the preacher Gabriel Malagrida are presented, such as his exile to the village of Setúbal, due to his fiery preaching against the administrative acts taken by the Portuguese crown. It concludes with the Jesuit's attempt to reestablish ties with the Josefina court, with the primary aim of avoiding the death sentence that would come, in any case, by the Inquisition. The points of the article aim to explain how religion and centralized power grew apart in the period from 1750 to 1758. To do so, we use micro-history, presenting the influence of monarchical power over the Society of Jesus as a unifying result. |
