Description
Summary:The article draws parallels between the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and the socio-ecclesiastical controversy in North Africa during the 4th-5th centuries AD. It explores the Russian Orthodox Church’s paternalistic approach towards Ukraine, the theological discourse during the conflict, and the involvement of paramilitary groups. The article highlights the hypocrisy within both the Russian Orthodox Church and the Donatist Church, emphasizing the violent and politically charged history of rival Christian parties. In the article both controversies are analysed and compared along three general lines: history of oppression, theological ideas, and life practices. The article suggests that understanding these historical parallels might help find a resolution for the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, possibly through the teachings of Augustine of Hippo, who advocated for dialogue and education.
