| Sumario: | The article sketches the beginnings and concept of the Moravian diaspora mission, which was directed chiefly towards the Christian churches of various confessions in Europe, and which should be seen as operating in parallel to Moravian missionary work. It aimed at comforting, strengthening and gathering the ‘children of God' in the churches and reached, in addition to most of the protestant regions of the Empire, above all areas in Northern and Eastern Europe. In the Szepes County, an old German-speaking area of the former Kingdom of Hungary which today lies in Slovakia, the diaspora mission was confronted with difficult conditions, since in the reign of the Emperor Joseph II the toleration regulations did not apply to the Moravian Church. None the less, between c. 1760 and 1800 diaspora work could be maintained there. Although it was restricted to the town of Iglo (Spisskd Nova Ves), its influence spread into the surrounding region. |
