| Summary: | Discussions concerning Jesus' gospel miracles are divisive in church communities. Discussions oscillate between two extremes: scorn, denial, and dismissal at one end, and reason-abandoning acceptance of historical authenticity at the other. Gospel interpreters have pursued resolutions to the puzzles of Jesus' gospel miracles to answer the question: What really happened? This article focuses on the gospel accounts of events commonly described as 'nature miracles', even though many debate the validity or accuracy of this term to describe these accounts. The eight so-called nature miracles are: feeding of 4000 and 5000 people with a miniscule amount of food; walking on the sea of Galilee; sending his friend to discover a coin in the mouth of a captured fish; directing his followers how and where to catch a large number of fish; instantly converting a large amount of water into fine wine; ordering a storm on the lake to be still; and using a curse to cause a fig tree to wither. Some believe these eight stories reflect actual events in the life of Jesus; others disagree and propose alternative explanations for the placement and significance of these narratives in the gospels. |
