Summary: | B.H. Streeter's The Four Gospels solidified research on gospel relationships. However, Streeter's proposal of local texts of the great churches in the second century has not been sufficiently appreciated and calls for an update. Much more now is known about the great churches of the second century and discoveries since Streeter completed his work have provided us with manuscripts dating from the period. This essay contrasts the history of two of the great churches, Alexandria and Ephesus, and suggests that the so -called "Alexandrian text" began its life not in that city, with a church that was small and struggling until about 180 CE, but in Ephesus, where the church was strong throughout the second century. I close with the suggestion that this carefully copied, strict text was none other than Hort's "Neutral text", which had found a new home in Alexandria by the end of the second century. |
