Description
Summary:This article provides a commentary on the role and perspectives of Sir Nicholas Throckmorton, the English ambassador to France, during the Colloquy of Poissy (1561), a critical event in the religious struggles of the sixteenth century. Analysis of Throckmorton’s correspondence and his interactions with key participants in the Colloquy sheds light on his relationship with French Huguenots and his involvement in presenting French religious discussions to the English government. Identification of his informants reveals channels through which England maintained close links with Reformed theologians and churches abroad. Throckmorton played an active role in promoting the English religious settlement as a potential model for France, and also engaged with arguments that the settlement might be modified to make it more acceptable abroad. Despite considering himself a member of the international Reformed community, this comprehended a variety of opinions and Throckmorton was wary of the rise of Calvinism. Furthermore, he navigated the political landscape with an eye toward England’s strategic interests, indicating the nuanced approach required amid religious unrest and international tension.
