| Summary: | In light of the current crisis facing the Church in dealing with sexually abusive priests, the tribunal staff has been discussing how it should handle a situation if it should learn through a party's testimony that he or she had been sexually abused by a priest, perhaps many years earlier, while still a minor. For this discussion, we are assuming the person making the allegation is credible. Perhaps the person never made this fact known to any one, either Church officials or civil authorities. Again for the sake of our discussion, we are assuming the abused person named the abuser. How should the tribunal handle this information? What level of confidentiality would be demanded of this testimony? What if the abused person gives no indication of wanting to pursue this issue in any way whatsoever. What if the priest were still in the active ministry? What if he were out of the active ministry? |
